On the Rise Coach Paul Weir and New Mexico State

February 7, 2017

The New Mexico State Men’s Basketball program continues to rise under first year head coach Paul Weir.

New Mexico State (22-2, 8-0) is currently on a 39-game Western Atlantic Conference (WAC) home winning streak, the second-longest conference home win streak in the country behind Stephen F. Austin. The Aggies’ last WAC home loss was a 68-60 loss to Nevada on Jan. 26, 2012.

Their current 22-2 (.917) overall record gives coach Paul Weir the best record of all first year head coaches in NCAA Division I.

Coach Weir has his team winning with hard nose defense. New Mexico State is 2nd in the WAC, behind CSU Bakersfield, in scoring defense and is ranked 40th nationally in the same category. New Mexico State also leads the conference in total blocked shots, three point field goal defense and Total rebounds per game.

Coach Weir is looking to lead New Mexico State to their 6th consecutive post season appearance. Prior to Coach Weir taking over the team, Coach Marvin Menzies led the team to 4 straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2012-2015) and an NIT appearance in 2016.
